“From Within My Castle Walls”

My mind is a castle, I wander its halls.
Searching for answers in a never-ending maze,
Unopened doors to unheard of lands, stairs leading nowhere,

All within my castle walls.

It’s got a thousand people inside and all of them are me.
A constant conversation to pass fleeting time,
Arguing to entertain, reevaluating life,
If my castle can be quiet, I’ve never heard it.

I talk to the shadows and they answer back.
They follow me, watch me, keep me company in the dark,
But fade away when light reveals what my heart cannot.
My shadow friends, I keep close, only in my castle can they come to life.

It’s surrounded by walls to keep out the world
That windows look down on from where I hide.
Rose-colored windows see beauty in dirt.
Sometimes I only see ashes and dust.

A village resides where my windows look.
I see it so clearly, yet it’s distorted by glass.
I watch the villagers talk, laugh, and play,
And call out just to find my words can’t breach my castle walls.

It’s my home away from home, the only place I’m truly myself.
It’s too hard to leave, its walls draw me back in.
It’s the place where I run to when I need to escape,
Yet lately it’s the place I’ve needed to escape from the most.

I built myself a castle to shelter me from the world-
Made stairways and mazes, doorways and halls.
But I built my walls too thick, my maze too deep,
And forgot the door out
